When I was 15ish (I think) I had a subscription to Brio Magazine...a Christian magazine for young girls. Anyone? okay.
anyway. there was a part at the back of a particular magazine where you could fill out a bit of information about yourself and Brio would match you up with a penpal. I was excited and anxiously waited for my new friend's letter. About two weeks later, it was there waiting for me in the mailbox. She had drawn all over the envelope and the notebook paper was lined with stickers...she drew my name in bubble letters and we started chatting about how old we were, where we lived and our favorite color. It started there...and we have corresponded via posted mail for years. No phone calls, no texting, no email...only hand-written letters and the occasional thoughtful gift. there are a ton! I have never heard her voice...I've seen pictures but never met her. She is very special to me. I know about her family, where she's lived, I know a bit about all 17 boys she's introduced me to in words and I know that she's a rock climbing extraordinaire. When we first started writing she lived in Huntington Beach, California...and we have the (almost) same birthday. We are the same age...and we found that so amusing. I still do, actually. Complete strangers, but I know her. She is very dear to me.

all that to say....I GET TO MEET HER TONIGHT! She is here, in MY town! In the words of my julie friend, 'I get to finally find out if you're a pretty photographer from virginia or a grumpy creepy old man'.

I am really so excited. Do you all think I'm weird now? crap. oh well....I don't care what you think.

I suppose there have been other times that I have focused more, edited more carefully and chosen the posting order more efficiently. However, these are from a magical time in my life and they are perfect just the way they are. I thought I'd share a few with you.

We honeymooned in Bromma & Stockholm, Sweden. We stayed at the Mornington Hotel in Bromma Plan and spent our days relaxing, enduring the long walk to the closest subway and enjoying another part of the world. The food was pretty tasty, the people were kind & helpful and the weather was breezy and calm. A beautiful honeymoon with the man of my dreams.

I suppose this topic is one of controversial measure. I know that I've been affected by it and I'm sure you or someone close to you has, too.
I used to have a very different view on this topic and handled it in the absolute wrong way. I would get angry and call whoever it may be out. It ended in bitterness and grudges...not a good way to live life OR run a business. After being encountered with it quite a few times, I decided to change the way I thought...you know, since the alternative (people being completely original) is highly unlikely. I am happier now and have taken certain copied images as compliments...to inspire someone else is the ultimate tip of their hat. So to anyone I have inspired, thank you for taking part in my journey.

the truth on trust.

These two were simply happy. Happy to be around, happy to be getting married and happy to trust me. Something I've put even greater confidence in after their wedding was the importance of trusting your photographer. completely. I will be the first to tell you that I may not be the photographer for you and for your wedding. I don't pride myself in taking the most reception dancing photos or in making 100% sure I snag every possible relative in family photos {to include snatching them from conversation while already at the reception}. I do the best I can in the amount of time given. I don't take on the weddings who hire me for my price and I make sure working together will be a good fit. What I DO pride myself in is making things that happen so very quickly slow down just a little.

Brittney & Blayne hired me for engagement photos, bridal portraits and their wedding. Not only did they get lots of pictures, we established a relationship...making their experience less awkward and more genuine. After getting their photos back after both sessions, they knew that when I suggested something, it was for the better-not to ruin their day. If you hire your photographer for their price or because it is a trivial decision, don't expect to be happy with your images for I am not a miracle worker. Brittney chose me because she wanted emotion in her photographs and because she valued the things that I offer; nostalgic images, the importance of detail and beauty in all things. Their entire family was kind to me and treated me as if they truly blessed I was there. Believe it or not, that is NOT the case at every wedding. Again...something I'm continually learning.

They gave me about 30 minutes of portrait time...which for most weddings, that is a perfect. We got some great images and I was very happy with them. We went back inside for the rest of the events. After some dancing, cake and lots more dancing, I glanced outside and noticed after the storm had brought on the most elegant block of fog. It hazed over the entire golf course and it was simply ethereal. Yes...they had already given me 30 minutes of portraits...and yes brittney had sweat dripping off of her face due to the air condition being broken...but this was a UNIQUE portrait opportunity. I got up the guts and asked her if she wouldn't mind a FEW more. Completely trusting of Julie & I, she agreed. She confessed she actually needed some air and a bit of a break. Had I not asked, I wouldn't have gotten this photograph. It's one that I'm so very proud of and I'm glad Brittney & Blayne were the stars. So there you have it folks, the truth on trust...AND the popular facebook photo.

This wedding was special for me. In August of 2009, when I was first starting out, I offered a free session giveaway. Kyle was the winner...and chose a couple session with his lovely lady, Rachel. This was one of my very first sessions and for that reason, this couple holds a special place in my heart. Since that day, I've gotten the privilege to photograph them four more times leading up to their beautiful wedding day. While photographing their wedding, I somehow managed to film a short video for them. Thankfully Julie covered my butt while I was videoing ;) I hope you enjoy it!

this session is one my very favorites. styled by julie eastwood and shot in stony creek, virginia in the most beautiful field of purple flowers....okay, weeds.

the couple has a sentimental tie with a country song mentioning butterbeans & cornbread...so we styled their engagement session around just that as a surpise for katherines parents. Kelvin's parents are from England so hopefully they weren't too offended by our country flare ;)

we had our engagement photos taken last night. It was sticky nasty hot outside but hey, what can ya do. Our photos were taken by Julie Eastwood (Curtis' cuz and my close friend) so Kristin Partin Photography got to be a part of the session. My most asked question about the wedding is 'soooo.....who's going to do YOUR pictures?' well, I'm happy to announce that sam stroud {a fab, well-known photo pro in lynchburg} will be walking with us on june 28. he's funny, has good lookin' kids and helped me out when I first started taking photos.

my mom made these for me--I purchased 4 yards of fabric for the actual curtain and used leftover fabric from the living room ottoman for the tabs. The rods were 2 bucks a piece. Total project cost around $50. Not bad for 4 curtains for larger than average windows.

lo and behold, my living room.

This desk was used by my grandma in their kitchen and then passed on to me while I was in school.

The paint is original. These gloves were my friend Julie's husbands grandmothers. The drawer pulls are from anthropologie.

My couch was purchased from a thrift store in Petersburg, Virginia for $80.00.

This globe was my grandmothers, the suitcases were thrifted for $4 a piece, the lamp stand was thrifted for $3.50 and the shade was on clearance at Target for $7.50. The turquoise frame holds a signed polaroid from the Civil Wars show in Charlottesville.

My chair was purchased from a thrift store for $25 (are you seeing a theme here?) and I made the pillow out of fabric scraps. This scrap happened to be my dads wedding shirt. oops.

My mom reupholstered this footstool with scrap fabric for $1.50

These are antique hatboxes purchased for $4 a piece at a yardsale

Shabby Chic table was purchased from goodwill for $12, the lamp stand was thrifted for $3.50 and the shade was on clearance at Target for $7.50, the books were acquired at an estate sale and the record was given to me by an old friend. "K" cup was on clearance at anthropologie.

Just a bunch of random information, this post.

On Monday, April 11 (yes, the one coming up) I am offering an all day mentoring session with a beautiful bride in Nags Head. If you're a photographer looking to get started, come along for an 8 hour drive and we'll chat about business, editing and what my favorite candy bar is. You're welcome to keep all of your photos and use them in your portfolio. I'll even throw in a mini session for you on the beach-great for headshots. We'll go over posing, interacting, how to compose a good photograph and how to use one spot for lots of photos.

If you're already a photographer in the BIZ and just need some fresh portraits to add or blog, I'd love to have you as well. I won't pretend like I know everything because I certainly don't. We'll just hang out and bounce ideas off of each other and talk about polar bears & slurpees. I'll throw in headshots for you, as well.

my friend amy & I decided to have a bit of a home-made swap. She made me the most fabulous wreath and I made her a pillow for her living room couch. I wish I would have taken a photo of the pillow before I boxed it up and shipped it, buuuuuut I didn't. In my defense. I made it the day before I moved to Lynchburg. Maybe I can get her to send me a photo of the pillow in its element ;)

I used to take the long way to this antique store I loved in petersburg. I knew the way I knew and it got me to where I needed to go. One day, there was a detour....a detour that I was so angry with. I was nearly CERTAIN I couldn't get there anymore because the way I knew had a small kink in it. As i started pouting and surfing through the radio stations convinced of my being lost, I looked to my right and saw the store. I made it there quicker & landed a super sweet parking spot that could not be reached when coming from my usual direction.

This photo represents my 'before detour' shooting style.

This is the same photograph only moving 6 steps to my right. The sun represents my detour...how I saw things before I learned to work WITH the sun. Just some food for thought.

Let me begin by saying that the thought of introducing these photographs began a while ago. This past summer, I did quite a few female senior portraits. Over a bit of time, I began to realize the difference a well taken photograph can make in the life of someone. I fell in love with the idea of continuously bringing joy and confidence to the minds of ladies who have so much to offer in a visually critical world. I began researching a type of session called boudoir focusing on the natural overwhelming beauty of a woman. Specifically, a woman in love.

these are all things I literally could not do as a full time bread winning occupation. I have a terrible memory, blood makes me nauseous, i'm scared of sharks and dark water that isn't bright blue like in postcards from jamaica, repetitious things would make me slowly go insane and I am far too scatterbrained and quirky to run a business.

Before you freak out thinking 'wow...I hired this girl to photograph my wedding', I do have a point. I was looking at my calendar today and nearly choked on my grapes. I wondered why the Lord had blessed me so and why he picked me to be involved in such a precious union as marriage. Every now & then (like...every other day) I am in need of a reality check. There are THOUSANDS of things that could go wrong when running a business such as mine. Equipment failure is more costly than I can afford, things could come up the day of someones wedding, I could screw up someones photos by sneezing on the first kiss....really, it's endless. quite intimidating and stressful, too.

But the reality is, this all has nothing to do with me. I am just an empty vessel that the Lord is using completely. You see, if this were all me, my business would be hopeless, pointless and cave. There is such peace in knowing that the creator of the universe is on my side helping me run my business and making sure my camera works, my sneezing stays under control and traffic allows me to get where i need to be.

My heart was burdened today to let whomever is reading this know that I owe my eyes, my hands and my mind to my Lord. He is my best friend & business partner. Thank you all for trusting me with your precious memories and for reading my 23rd public reality check of 2011. ps, the sneezing thing was totally a joke.

I hope my idea isn't lost among the (seemingly) hundreds of other photographers who happened upon this brilliance. 'this brilliance' being rebranding....starting from scratch. I've felt for a long time the modern sleek look of my blog and website haven't fully matched the imagery I am drawn to and ultimately create. I've pulled my resources, done my homework and am in the final stretch of the new kristinpartinphotography.com. I think it is critical to utilize all of your networking resources and that starts with making sure your brand is 100% you. Afterall, choosing a photographer is literally choosing a photographer, not just their photographs. I mean...people need to know what they're getting themselves into when they hire me. I'm a mess, I say.

I thought maybe I'd give you a little of my inspiration and a tiny peek. Stay tuned...I'll be celebrating with a giveaway. who doesn't love those?!

I've had several emails over the past few months from folks wondering what an engagement session is like. Although words are pretty grand, their questions led me to an alternate way of answering them. I always am fascinated by behind the scenes footage and thought I'd give it a go myself.

I asked my pal Sara to come with me and shoot behind me and together we came up with this glimpse inside a session. I'm thankful that she was willing to brave the chilly weather with me and also lend me her sweater....and scarf. Enjoy!

I went to dinner tonight with an old friend from my BBC days. We lived across the hall from each other and it's literally been about 4ish years. Her grandparents live near me (10 minutes to be exact) and thanks to facebook, she realized that. Seems like all the cool people live in Texas. You know, I was in need of a chat tonight. It's funny how life can throw you a 'summer market on the side of 460 on the way to the beach' load of lemons and at the end of the day you're left with nothing but a fridge full of lemonade. At least that's how I choose to see it. She sweetly reminded me of Proverbs 3. Here, let me refresh your memory.

Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you;
bind them around your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
So you will find favor and good success.
in the sight of God and man.

I just wanted to encourage you of the hope we have in the Lord. His plan is sovereign. As in complete royal authority. There is such a peace knowing that I rest in the palm of His hand. He finds me beautiful and he delights in me. He uniquely designed me and will never leave me. If that doesn't make you feel special, I don't know what would. Believe me, I'm not always this glass half full. I was quite the downer earlier today...my family will attest. Thankfully my God is greater, my God is stronger and my God is higher than any other. Ahhh, joy.

I'm dreadfully sorry if you are now craving lemonade...

hannah made my WHOLE entire year. I love a fine frenzy and when I was unable to go to a relatively close cheap concert she was having, she got alison to autograph a personally picked leaf and had it framed. neato right?!
